Protecting healthcare workers – lessons from Ebola

Key points of this article: the two most effective methods of protecting healthcare workers are diagnostic testing, and proper use of PPE. High rates of healthcare worker infection during Ebola were largely driven by insufficient or improper use of PPE. A lack of quick diagnostic testing for Ebola and a shortage of PPE put health care workers at risk because they were exposed to asymptomatic but infective individuals and to symptomatic patients with undiagnosed illness. The Ebola outbreak has many parallels to that of covid-19 and many lessons.
